Gay weddings are expected to start in a months time in New York after the state became the sixth in the US to allow same-sex marriage.
Crowds that had gathered in Greenwich Village and Times Square celebrated as the bill was signed into law. The iconic Empire State Building which is lit up in rainbow colours for Pride week has become an image that will go down in history.
New York state senate which is republican controlled voted 33 – 29 for the bill which had already been approved by the lower house.
New York now joins Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia in allowing same-sex marriages.
This is momentous breakthrough and we are seeing slowly but surely a movement towards equality. Other states will surely follow suit and we can only hope that other countries will take up the issue also.
