Reclaiming St. George

If you didn’t already know, today is St George’s Day. It’s a day the English should be celebrating their patron saint. It baffles me that the day passes by so quietly when compared it’s Irish and Scottish equivalents.

I believe there is little chance that St. George’s Day will be declared a public holiday any time soon but that shouldn’t stop us marking the occasion.

In recent years the St. George cross has been hijacked by groups on the far right. We have to remember that these group do not speak for the majority of the English. The St. George cross is our flag and we should be proud to display it, not ashamed of what people may believe it stands for.

Maybe in coming years our national pride will increase and we will see more public celebrations on St. George’s Day. Until then we can at least raise a glass (or two) and be proud to live in this wonderful, inclusive and multicultural country.
